چکیده

Synthetic colloidal spheres play a central role in applications as diverse as catalysis, medical diagnostics, and photonics. Even as many applications advance toward single-sphere implementations, methods for characterizing colloidal spheres typically offer only sampleaveraged overviews of such properties as spheres’ sizes and porosities. Moreover, such characterization methods as mercury adsorption porosimetry, nitrogen isotherm porosimetry, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray tomography require preparatory steps that may affect particles’ properties. Here, we demonstrate that holographic video microscopy can meet this need for particleresolved in situ characterization, and that results of these optical measurements can be interpreted to measure individual spheres’ porosities.

Robustness of holographic video microscopy against defects in illumination

We numerically investigate how defects in the illumination system of a holographic microscope, in particular divergence and tilt of the illuminating laser beam, affect the measured properties of colloidal spherical particles. We show that under typical experimental conditions divergence and tilt of the laser beam do not affect the measured parameters significantly, confirming the robustness of ...

Flow visualization and flow cytometry with holographic video microscopy.

The video stream captured by an in-line holographic microscope can be analyzed on a frame-by-frame basis to track individual colloidal particles' three-dimensional motions with nanometer resolution, and simultaneously to measure their sizes and refractive indexes. Through a combination of hardware acceleration and software optimization, this analysis can be carried out in near real time with of...

Multidimensional optical fractionation with holographic verification

The trajectories of colloidal particles driven through a periodic potential energy landscape can become kinetically locked in to directions dictated by the landscape’s symmetries. When the landscape is realized with forces exerted by a structured light field, the path a given particle follows has been predicted to depend exquisitely sensitively on such properties as the particle’s size and refr...

Multi-step Coating of Monodisperse Silica Spheres by Titania Nanoparticles Base on Electrostatic Attraction Strategy

TiO2-SiO2 core-shell particles include of monodisperse silica core and nanostructured titania shell were synthesized by a multi-step coating process. The monodisperse silica spheres were synthesized by Stöber method and titania shell was obtained of a colloidal sol prepared by a hydrolysis–condensation reaction. The titania sol was deposited on monodisperse silica spheres by a multi-step coatin...

Strategies for three-dimensional particle tracking with holographic video microscopy.

The video stream captured by an in-line holographic microscope can be analyzed on a frame-by-frame basis to track individual colloidal particles' three-dimensional motions with nanometer resolution. In this work, we compare the performance of two complementary analysis techniques, one based on fitting to the exact Lorenz-Mie theory and the other based on phenomenological interpretation of the s...
